The scythe ignores defence on ghosts. This is incredibly helpful in haunted mansion and haunted forest. it is highly suggested that you equip this weapon immediately after you get it from the reaper, as it will probably be the most powerful melee weapon you will have for quite a long time. (Until you get the mace, which anyway is only marginally better than the scythe.)
